Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
AI credits and top-ups: how they work
AI credits power GitLaw's AI - drafting a contract, reviewing a document. You get credits two ways: a monthly allowance that comes with your tier, and top-ups you buy when you need more.
Your monthly allowance
Every seat gets a monthly allowance:
- Free - $5 of credits/month
- Pro - $25 of credits per seat/month
- Enterprise - a custom credit pool
Two things to know:
- It resets each cycle. Unused credits don't carry over.
- It doesn't transfer between members. Each person has their own allowance.
Top-ups
When you need more, buy a top-up. Top-ups work differently in three ways:
- Pooled at the organisation level - shared by the whole team, not tied to one person.
- Used after a member's own allowance runs out - GitLaw spends the monthly allowance first, then the shared pool.
- They roll over - top-up credits don't expire. They stay in your pool until you use them.
Top-ups come in fixed amounts - for example, $25 or $50.
Monthly allowance vs top-ups
| Feature | Monthly allowance | Top-ups |
|---|---|---|
| Comes from | Your tier | A one-off purchase |
| Belongs to | Each member individually | The whole organisation (pooled) |
| Used | First | After the member's allowance runs out |
| At end of cycle | Resets (unused is lost) | Rolls over (never expires) |
When to top up vs upgrade
One member keeps running out? Upgrade them Free → Pro for a bigger allowance every cycle. Team has the occasional busy stretch? A top-up adds shared credits that keep until you need them. Many teams do both.
You buy top-ups from your organisation's billing settings - they're available right away. For the wider picture, see How does billing work?.
