Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What happens to my documents if I cancel or delete my account?

It depends on whether you are cancelling your plan or deleting your account - these are two very different actions.

Cancelling or downgrading your plan

Cancelling a paid subscription does not remove your account or your documents. You move to the free plan, which comes with a reduced monthly AI credit allowance. Everything you have saved - documents, folders, and shared files - stays exactly where it is.

You can export any document at any time, whether you are on a paid or free plan. To understand what changes when you move between plans, see How does billing work? or How do I cancel or change my plan?.

Deleting your account

Account deletion permanently removes your personal data and your private documents. Before requesting deletion, export anything you want to keep - there is no way to recover documents after the process completes.

Here is what happens to documents that belong to an organisation or have collaborators:

  • Shared or public documents - files you own that are shared with collaborators, or that are public, are transferred to GitLaw's organisation so that collaborators retain access. They are not deleted.
  • Organisation-linked documents - files associated with an organisation account are reassigned to that organisation. Collaborators within the organisation continue to have access under the same permissions.
  • Private documents with no collaborators - these belong to you alone and are removed along with your account data.

Your personal profile, account settings, and any user-scoped data are deleted. Documents that others depend on are preserved under the appropriate organisation or collaborator ownership.

Before you request deletion: export any documents you want to keep using Export your document. Once deletion is processed it cannot be undone.
