Standard Invoice Template (US) by OLL

Open Legal LibraryUpdated 1 Jan 2026

The Standard Invoice Template for freelancers based in the U.S. is a plain-language, structured template for requesting payment for services. It helps freelancers present charges, payment terms, and business details in a clear, consistent format. Created by OLL's team of legal experts.

Standard Invoice Template

Instructions: Use this template when billing a client for services. Fill in the placeholders (in square brackets) with your details and the details of the client and project. According to best‑practice invoicing guidance, an invoice should clearly show your business and the client’s information, a unique invoice number, dates, an itemised description of services, the total amount due, and payment. Professional invoices also include payment instructions and an optional note of thanks.

“Net 30” indicates that payment is due 30 calendar days from the invoice date; other net terms (eg., Net 14, Net 60) reflect the number of days before full payment is required. You can also offer variations like 2/10 Net 30, which provides a small discount (eg., 2%) if the client pays within 10 days. Ensure your contract specifies the starting point for the count (invoice date, delivery date, etc.), and state whether weekends and public holidays count toward the deadline.
